Register Now – Feb.9, 2012 – COPD Summit

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the most deadly conditions facing Americans, yet the crisis is rarely talked about among policymakers and mainstream media. We need your help to change that.

Thursday, February 9, BREATHE LA and NHLBI[1] COPD Learn More Breathe Better ® campaign will hold a COPD advocacy summit entitled, “Building Stronger COPD Coalitions: Learning from Best Practices.” This summit will feature presentations from health care professionals, caregivers and people with COPD as we lay the framework for “Turning Ideas into Action” that will result in greater advocacy for COPD awareness, treatment and research.

COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 120,000 Americans each year. More than 12 million Americans are currently diagnosed with COPD, including 1.6 million people in California . Approximately, the same numbers of people have COPD but have yet to be diagnosed with the disease. Still, this life-changing and deadly condition fails to have an appropriate sense of urgency in public and policy discussions. Breakout groups at the summit will brainstorm ideas that will result in greater advocacy for COPD patients, as well as raise awareness of the condition so those with the disease can be diagnosed sooner and receive important life-improving treatments and information.

The event will take place on February 9, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Because you are a key stakeholder in this important issue, this event is being made available to you and your organization at no cost if you respond promptly.  The event will be held at the California Endowment, at 1000 N. Alameda St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.  The keynote lunch speaker will be Miriam O’Day, Senior Director of Public Policy for the COPD Foundation. An agenda and more information are attached.

Please RSVP by January 31, 2012 and guarantee your spot by replying to Claudia Medina at (323) 935-8050 Ext: 237 or cmedina@breathela.org.

We hope you will join us in this effort and look forward to working with you as we directly address the COPD crisis in Los Angeles County.
