Get FREE Trees Planted On Your Property

Would you like FREE trees for your property? If so, you’re in luck! The Korean Youth Community Center (KYCC) has two different programs available to distribute and plant trees throughout the Mid-City area. Their Tree Planting Coordinator, Jerry Velasquez, presented at the Monday MINC Stakeholder meeting. You can get trees planted for you in your parkway. And if you’re looking for shade trees for the rest of your property, they will provide up to 7 trees to you that you will need to plant yourself.

As an added bonus, KYCC will have a booth at our upcoming MINCfest on Saturday, March 29th from 2-6PM – they will be giving away 50 fruit trees to the first people who sign up!!

Flyers and all of the details are attached below. This is a great program, so be sure to take advantage of it soon!

Free Legal Services at LA Law Library

Free Legal Services at LA Law Library

Free legal services are usually hard to find — but not in October. Each October lawyers and legal service providers celebrate volunteerism and “pro bono” work (for the public good) by stepping up and reaching out to people who need legal help. This week-long, nationwide effort begins at the LA Law Library on Monday, October 21 with a free consumer debt clinic and ends on Saturday, October 26th, with a legal services fair where you can talk with any one of more than 25 legal aid organizations, consumer protection agencies, community-based organizations, bar associations and lawyer referral programs. Booths will be set up on site and staffed by professionals providing one-on-one consultations in conjunction with classes and workshops scheduled throughout the day.

Perhaps you are dealing with a landlord who has turned off your utilities? Or you are a teen who has outstanding traffic warrants and you need help to clear your record so you can get a job? Are you in the middle of creating a parenting plan in a child custody matter and need some direction? Are you thinking about starting a small business and don’t know where to start? What if you have gotten over extended and now debt collectors keep calling and harassing you?

During Pro Bono Week you can get help with these and other legal issues. On Monday, October 21 from 6 – 8 pm, you can get legal advice concerning consumer law issues — for example, if you are being sued by a credit card company, you are getting harassing phone calls from bill collectors, or you want to find out about your rights regarding paying someone who did nothing for you. (Advance registration is required.) On Saturday, October 26, from 10 am-4 pm, attend the Legal Services Fair and find out what no cost and low cost services are available to you. Speak with professionals about a wide variety of matters such as citizenship eligibility, divorce and child custody issues, and even arts-related matters. Or learn how to resolve disputes through mediation rather than the courts. Attend a session on custody, domestic violence and child welfare. Find out about guardianships for children or register for a clinic to get help clearing your criminal record. To see the complete list of service providers who will be gathered in one place or to register for any of the classes or clinics requiring advanced registration, please visit LA Law Library.

Set in-between the Stanley Mosk Courthouse and City Hall, the LA Law Library is the largest public law library west of the Mississippi River. Housing nearly one million volume equivalents, a team of professional librarians responded to approximately 75,000 law related questions from the general public and legal professionals in fiscal 2012-2013.

The events will take place at the LA Law Library located at 301 West 1st Street in downtown Los Angeles, next door to the Metro Civic Center Red Line stop. For information about the best parking rates and nearby parking, check out Parkopedia or ParkMe.

FREE Parking Signage Upgrade

This falls under the category of free and easy things you can do to improve your neighborhood and your community!

At the August MINC Stakeholder Meeting, LA DOT’s Bruce Gillman reminded stakeholders how it is possible to get faded no parking/street cleaning signage replaced.  One needs to write to Department of Transportation (DOT) and ask them to replace it.  It will be reviewed and can take anywhere from 90 days to a year to get them replaced – but the wait can often be worth it!

Hollywood-Wilshire District of DOT

One of our Board members sent in their request – See the attached pics for before and after pictures.  Quite a difference – and it’s one of the easy fixes you can do for your street/neighborhood too!

FREE – Bike Racks & Corrals From LA DOT

At the MINC Stakeholder Meeting in August, we learned from our guest speaker, Bruce Gillman, from LA Dept. of Transportation, that FREE bike racks and corrals are available for commercial corridors.  It is for businesses/organizations only to “adopt”.  But if your business would like one – or a church, school, etc. – be sure to pass along the information.

If you’re not sure what a bike corral is – check out this link below – it’s a cool new way the city has of taking back parking spaces in lieu of bike spaces:

(See attached pictures of a bike corral.)

Here is the link to request a bike rack:

Be sure to put in your request before this opportunity passes!

FREE – Adopt-A-Basket Program

The City Bureau of Public Works has a number of “Adopt-A” programs.  You can adopt medians or other spots in the City to care for and look after, and the city will provide you with the materials needed.

But one of the most popular ones is for commercial areas – to adopt a wire mesh trash can – the City will provide you with a FREE trash can and trash bag liners, if you agree to care for it.  It’s a really cool program!  Check out the link below – and there’s a form attached as well.
