We are celebrating our 47th year of creative community enrichment with a Village Art Exhibit and Sale featuring artists who live at the Village as well as artists who create work at our
workshops.The show will encompass painting, ceramic, photography,
assemblage art and more by emerging and established artists from Los Angeles and beyond, coming together in the spirit of creativity and human experience. We invite you to join us for the reception!Where: St. Elmo Village // 4830 St. Elmo Dr. in Mid-City, LA

Our crowdfunding campaign has garnered $2,285 towards updating computers to teach youth tech-related skills and developing new art and educational programs. We still need your support in keeping the Arts accessible to all people so that they can, in turn, go out into the world as happier, more whole and creative individuals. If you have visited the Village or taken part in its workshops, you understand the importance of art-making as a creative and personal outlet for self-expression. We are asking those who have the means to support the Arts by making a contribution through Crowdrise or sending a check payable to St. Elmo Village. Thank you in advance for your support. Double the Workshops, Double the Fun!
From June 15 – August 10, 2016, youth can participate in the Children’s Art Workshop every Wednesday from 11 am to 12:30 pm in addition to the Saturday workshops. All kids from age 4 to 17 are welcome!
Join us as we celebrate the creativity of our youth with art and refreshments. Art will be available for purchase – part of the proceeds will go back to funding art workshops for more children.
Meet Our 2016 Getty Muticultural Undergraduate Intern Tiana Chanaiwa
Tiana is new to the St. Elmo Village family of Interns. She currently
attends Pomona College in Claremont with a major in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish.Tiana brings to the Village experience working with diverse communities through her work with Pomona College Academy for Youth Success in Claremont, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Community Arts Partnership Summer Academy, and several other wonderful organizations serving the youth, environment and community.
We know Tiana will fit right in with St. Elmo Village, and we are very excited to have her with us this summer.

The California Department of Social Services, DPSS is scheduled to be at the Wellington Square Farmer’s Market on Sunday, May 22nd from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Our Eligibility staff will provide on-site Medi-Cal and CalFresh enrollment assistance as well as educate the community about our DPSS programs.

We are honored to have the world-renowned West Angeles Choir perform on stage followed by an invocation by Bishop Blake, who is recognized as one of the greatest preachers of this generation with a message that ministers to the whole person and brings together people of various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
The Lula Washington Contemporary Dance Foundation was founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington to provide a creative outlet for dance artists in south Los Angeles. The founding mission is to build a world class contemporary modern dance company that travels worldwide with contemporary modern dance works that reflect African-American history and culture.
BUYEPONGO, meaning “to cause a ruckus,” is a high-energy creative musical group with an infectious sound that pushes crowds to dance. The group’s pulse and power is built around the drum and guacharaca (pronounced: wah cha rah ca) giving them an upbeat tropical flare deeply rooted in the Caribbean coast of South and Central America. This Pan-Latin fusion takes its cues from traditional “roots” music of Colombia, Haiti, Belize, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. Their arrangements are unique, full-of-life, and infused with jazz and funk creating a vibrant sound that seamlessly fuses styles to its own modern Afro-Latin groove, self-titled Buyangú.

Director of the World Stage, Dwight Trible is a singer who combines the best of vocal virtuosity with musicianship and improvisational skills to the delight of audiences and musicians alike.
Kamau Daáood, a founder of the World Stage, has written two volumes of poetry and has a spoken word CD entitled “Leimert Park.” He performs spoken word poetry around the world.

, also members of Rhythm Arts Alliance, will lead an interactive drumming workshop. Some drums provided by Rhythm Arts Alliance, but everyone is welcome to bring their own.
Sacred and Al Jackson are both DJs/producers and are part of a collective known as Soul Children, which hosted a party called Juju at 5th St. Dick’s in Leimert Park for many years.
Murals + Mentors (2:30-2:45pm) – Local youth who participated in workshops to design construction phase artworks will discuss their experiences working on the project. The fruits of their labor are already on view at three station sites along the C/LAX Corridor.

Join Us Rain or Shine – WSIA Beautification Along Washington Blvd. – Sat. 4/9, 9a-12p
This is the final reminder… and we really could use some help!
We have a handful of volunteers who have offered to support our beautification efforts along Washington Blvd., but we need about 30 people to make this go quickly, and we are definitely short of that number.
Please come out and support the neighborhood and our Wellington Square Improvement Association. We will be planting and mulching the parkway between Wellington Rd. and Victoria Ave. We will also be doing a cleanup – picking up trash, etc. along the entire stretch of Washington Blvd. in Wellington Square.
All neighbors are encouraged to come out and help. We will be joined by KYCC for the planting, as part of a project funded by MINC. The plants have been generously supplied by Lore Hilburg from Buckingham Rd.

Anyone who is able to start even earlier (8AM) – we need a few volunteers to go to Lore Hilburg’s house (1943 Buckingham Rd.) to prep the cardboard we will be using for weed abatement.

Community Police Academy – Starts 1/26/16
The LAPD has an upcoming Community Police Academy coming up on January 26th. It’s an 11 week course that will be held at the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles (6505 W. Wilshire Bl.). The class will meet each Tuesday evening between 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM. The course will conclude with a graduation ceremony on April 5th.
